BOBS RANKINGS

Those other guys — the Bowl Championship Series folks — have released their first rankings of the college football season. It’s also time for the first rankings from the Bottom of the Barrel Series. Perhaps you’ve heard them referred to more affectionately as the BOBS.

This is the BOBS’ ninth season of bringing attention — mostly unwanted attention — to teams at the bottom of the standings. Western Kentucky, the reigning champion, is ranked second as it begins its bid to become the first repeat BOBS champion. To repeat, the Hilltoppers will have to find a way to leap over No. 1 Akron.

The deep six in the Week 1 rankings, with first-place vote in parentheses:

1. AKRON (1)

Record: 0-7

Last year’s final ranking: 5 (as part of “MAC Attack”)

Last week’s result: lost to Ohio 10-38

This week’s game: vs. Western Michigan (2-4)

2. WESTERN KENTUCKY

Record: 0-6

Last year’s final ranking: 1

Last week’s result: lost 30-35 to Louisiana-Monroe

This week’s game: at Louisiana-Lafayette (2-4)

3. THE LAND OF DISENCHANTMENT

(New Mexico and New Mexico State)

Record: 1-11

Last year’s final ranking: not ranked

Last week’s results: New Mexico did not play; New Mexico State lost 10-33 to Fresno State.

This week’s games: New Mexico vs. San Diego State (4-2); New Mexico State at Idaho (3-3).

4. NORTH TEXAS

Record: 1-6

Last year’s final ranking: 4

Last week’s result: lost 10-34 to Florida International

This week’s game: idle

4. MEMPHIS

Record: 1-6

Last year’s final ranking: not ranked

Last week’s result: lost 19-41 to Southern Mississippi

This week’s game: idle

6. SAN JOSE STATE

Record: 1-6

Last year’s final ranking: 6

Last week’s result: lost 0-48 to Boise State

This week’s game: vs. Fresno State (4-2)

ALSO RECEIVING VOTES: Florida Gators in October (0-3); everything the Nebraska Cornhuskers have said since losing to Texas in the last year’s Big 12 Championship Game; “style points;” Dallas Cowboys’ touchdown celebration penalties.

NOTES: Akron has never been No. 1 in the BOBS. Its previous highest ranking came last year at No. 3 when it was part of the “MAC Pack” of bad teams….We know you are curious: The Land of Disenchantment’s lone win came when New Mexico State defeated New Mexico 16-14 in the 101st edition of the Rio Grande Rivalry….This is North Texas’ 24th week in the BOBS, moving the Mean Green alone into fifth place on the all-time list, behind Idaho (37), Buffalo (36), Louisiana-Monroe (27) and SMU (27)….On the bright side for San Jose State, the Spartans were outscored only 7-0 by Boise State in the second half

BOBS CHAMPIONS: 2002: Buffalo; 2003: Army; 2004: Central Florida; 2005: Temple; 2006: Duke; 2007: Idaho; 2008: North Texas; 2009: Western Kentucky.

BOBS appears Mondays through the college football regular season. Find sports humor columnist David Thomas on Facebook by searching for “Fans’ Insider,” and follow him on Twitter @FansInsider.
